dark grey downstairs bathroom

It might be the smallest room in the house but our downstairs loo is one of my favourite rooms in the house. I love sharing a good makeover, especially with before and after photos and I'm so pleased with how this turned out that I thought I'd share it with you guys. Everything I used is linked down below. I've called it a downstairs bathroom dark grey makeover but its not really a fully fledged bathroom, although it is super spacious thanks to it being a new build.

Thanks to it being so large and light I knew it could handle a dark colour much to my husbands horror. If you watched my Weekly Vlog back in August I painted the back wall with B&Q Colours paint in the shade Ashalt. Its a super dark grey but really lovely. I started by painting just the wall but in the end decided to paint the pipe boxing too. I coated the  boxing and shelf with an acrylic glaze just to protect the paint so I can pop plant pots on it and wipe it down if I need to.

Thanks to some Pinterest inspo I knew I wanted a couple of floating shelves and found these bargain ones that match our oak engineered wood floor really well. On them I've dotted some succulents, gold accents and some towels which Ben jokingly calls my display towels ha ha. I'm turning into Monica from Friends with all my towels. I just really love the look of rolled up towels like you get at the spa and mixed plain grey and one of my palm print towels.

I've tried to stick to gold hardware where I can but I haven't been too strict and changed the taps or vanity cupboard handles. I did struggle to find a nice gold towel rail and happened upon a B&Q set which had everything in. I only used tow bits from it but for £17 for the lot it was worth it. We debated for ages about a light fitting and I actually had a cage fitting at one point but in the end we went for a simple gold fitting with an industrial black and white cord and a filament bulb.

Lots of the bits I bought for the bathroom were bought so long ago now they have sold out. I snapped up things when I saw them even though we hadn't even moved in yet. The Palm print towel and storage boxes I spotted in Next and I'm so glad I bought them as they didn't hang around long. I love that they add some pattern and design to the room and when I want to switch up the style I can just buy new towels with a new pattern.

I have a faux succulent buying habit so I had no problem populating the room with a bit of greenery and one of my faves is the big fake plant from Homesense which sits in a shiny gold plant pot from H&M.

My mirrors were a bit of a diy. I bought a set of three cheap plastic mirrors from B&M Bargains and painted them gold and decorated with Annie Sloan gold leaf to give a sort of distressed look and its made them look much more expensive. I love how they turned out.

I really wanted a mirror above the sink but as the window is there I opted for putting my hexagon mirror propped up on the windowsill instead. This was a bargain buy which I painted gold. I've added gold and marble touches with my soap dispenser and reed diffuser. To keep privacy we have a really pretty blind which is semi sheer with a fern design on it. It lets in lots of light which is great as we do have it all the way down most of the time as the window is on the front of the house.

And thats it!! A little look at our Downstairs Bathroom dark Grey Makeover! Who thought a toilet would be so worthy of a blog post ha ha. I'm hoping to share more of the finished rooms on the blog over the next few weeks so do let me know which you'd like to see next?

What blew my mind is that I didn’t even realize that you had a radiator until I saw the ‘before’ picture!! The radiator simply disappears against the dark background! Lovely..

I am going to do this with in next month. Can you tell me how much cost you needed to complete this project? Thanks in advance for your answer and also for sharing your experience with all of us.

      Hi Howard,

I probably spent around £150 on all the paint, shelves and accessories.

Hi I LOVE your makeover. Just wondering where you got the shelves from? Thanks in advance :)

  • Dan May 20, 2020 at 5:42 pm

Hiya. Love youur makeover. Just wondered what the dimensions of the room are? We’re in the process of trying to design a build (without an architect, yikes) and are working out how big the downstairs loo needs to be. Yours looks compact but not cramped. If you could let us know if you have time, that would be great.
