From Fashion Geek to Fashion Chic – Why I should be at the LOOK Show

August 15, 2011 10 Comments
I haven’t always been what you would exactly call cool!
In my childhood years I had strange thick hair that stuck out at weird angles. My Dad used to call  me Worzel Gummidge, always fondly of course!
In later years my hair went on to resemble a large over sized bell, I have memories of my mother holding a “hot brush” to curl it under while she counted to ten.

At High School I was most definitely uncool
and I felt inadequate in the fashion stakes too. Uniforms should be just that! Uniform. But I never quite felt like I pulled mine off. The cool girls skirts were short and blazers fitted and my long skirt and baggy blazer just didn’t quite cut it
I tried everything to fit in. I had the “Rachel From Friends” hair cut and even the perm!!!

I was gawky and thin and as you can see, had the biggest feet in the world!!
But like most geeky girls I had aspirations to be just that little bit cooler. At one point I wanted to be a model, I even did some awful test shots (arghhhh)
Oh my god pvc pants! what was I thinking.

As you can probably guess I didn’t make it as a model. Instead I went on to College. Being a geek I was pretty good at academia and college was the next logical step. And just before my GCSE results I had all my hair chopped off and the confidence boost it gave me was amazing. You can’t hide behind your hair if you don’t have any!!
But I never stopped feeling like that girl just on the edge of the social circle. My fashion attempts never quite worked and I couldnt help but look at those popular girls and aspire to be like them. My hair which I had hoped would be short and funky was only ever spiky and boyish.
So when did it all change?
A few years ago I bought my first Vintage piece and in doing so I found my own style. It was only a necklace but with it came a sense of relief. That I was an individual and that if I liked something it didn’t matter whether it was cool or not.
From there my style evolved and my love of fashion began. Over time I’ve become even more of a fashion addict. I adore the British High Street and I love to mix my quirky Vintage accessories with a Primark dress or a H&M Tshirt.
So do I care if I’m cool or not? Honestly? Not as much as I did.
I do get a certain sense of achievement if I open a magazine and my last High street purchase is there on the High Street hottest page weeks after I bought it! To be ahead of the game for once, for a geek who always felt one step behind is a pretty great feeling.
Do I want to be a fashion journalist, a fashion major, a budding designer or a intern?
No.
I started my blog simply to share my love of fashion and vintage. To feel part of a community that welcomes you no matter your style or look. To show people MY style, full of vintage quirks and originality and show just how far I’ve come. I try now not to aspire to be like anyone.
I like to think of it as Fashion geek to Fashion Chic.
And that’s why I’d love to be on the front row of the LOOK show
