pom pom cushion diy tutorial

Today's post is another DIY and I'm back using my pom pom maker to jazz up a cushion for this Pom Pom Cushion DIY tutorial.  I knew I wanted a pom pom cushion to sit on our spare room bed and after picking up an amazing lime yellow throw at Homesense (see my Home haul post here) I wanted one that matched it and just couldn't find one, so I decided to make my own. I found this knitted cushion at TK Maxx which was the perfect colour and then went to my local fabric shop and found the perfect shade of wool. You could add pom poms to a cushion you already have and you could also use a contrasting colour wool too which would look really nice too.

I using my good old pom pom maker which I got from Etsy here. The set was a set of 4 sizes and was around £5 and Etsy has so many choices to choose from and I'm using the medium one for this pom pom diy.
I have given instructions on using the pom pom maker below but your set will come with them and there are some great YT tutorials if you need a more detailed view.
So here's what you need to do this pom pom cushion.

you will need

CUSHION | WOOL | SCISSORS | POM POM MAKER

STEP ONE

Choose the size of pom pom maker you want to use. I've chosen the medium sized one. The pom pom makers come in two parts so sandwich these together and hold firmly.

STEP TWO

Start to wrap your wool starting at one side. You can wrap along and then push back to one side to build up the wool.

STEP THREE

Wrap the wool around until you have filled one side. Don't overfill otherwise it wont close and make sure to wrap wool right to the edges or you'll end up with really oval shaped pom pom.

STEP FOUR

Move on to wrapping the other side and once full close up the pom pom maker and move the plastic catches to fix the pom pom maker shut.

STEP FIVE

Run the scissors down between the two pom pom makers and cut the wool the whole way around.

STEP SIX

Then using a length of wool tie the pom pom up by running the wool down the channel and tying tight. Wrap and knot several times and leave some excess

STEP SEVEN

I like to trim my pom pom with the maker still on. it means I can hold it and get a nice round shape. Trim any excess length off to make a round shape and to make all four uniform in size.

STEP EIGHT

Unlock your pom pom pom makers and slide off. Fluff out your pom pom and trim any remaining straggly bits off.

FINAL STEP

Use the excess wool and a big needle and sew the pom poms onto the corners of your cushion. I've left the stitches loose so my pom poms dangle slightly.

FINISHED!

And that's it! Finished!! I love how simple this Pom Pom cushion DIY is and how it jazzes up a simple cushion. You could also use this pom pom DIY to add detail to a throw or blanket too and it would also look so cute with four different contrasting colours of pom pom instead.

If you don't fancy the diy then you can shop my selection of pom pom home buys below instead.

Happy DIYing!
