THINGS TO DO IN LONDON – SKETCH LONDON AFTERNOON TEA

Sketch London has been on my Things To Do In London list for a while now so I knew I had to go when me and the other half had a short break in London a few weeks ago.  I’d seen Instagrams a plenty of the pretty pink gallery and of course the amazing toilets so it was top of my list of places to visit.
I booked us both in for the Sketch afternoon tea online and on the day we were treated to a cheeky glass of champers too which was just lovely.  The afternoon tea consists of sandwiches including a gorgeous mozzarella and pesto panini which comes warm and wrapped in paper and ribbon.  The afternoon tea is unlimited so you can order more of any of the sandwiches you like (which we did) before you move on to the desserts.

First up were the scones which also come warm and were massive!! I adore scones they are my favourite bit of afternoon tea and these were especially good. Other desserts included a really tasty chocolate gateau and the yummiest of homemade marshmallows. We drank a really nice vanilla tea which we both really liked which is funny as my other half isn’t usually a fan of tea. We both also agreed that when the cake stand first arrived we didn’t think it looked like enough to fill us up but by the end neither of us could actually finish all the cakes and had to take them away in a box (plus some extra marshmallows)

The whole look of the Gallery is so cool. From the deco style pink chairs to the copper lamps and bar to the simple black and white illustrations that adorned the wall I loved all of it. The whole room has been designed by India Mahdavi who has redesigned the gallery to support artist David Shrigleys work which features on the walls. 239 new pieces of work line the walls and form the largest group of original drawings David Shrigley has ever exhibited. David has also designed the china that the afternoon tea is served on which features his quirky black drawings  and all of which is available to buy too. The design is all part of a long-term programme of artist-conceived restaurants at the iconic London venue and this design will only stay in place for another year I believe.

Special mention should go to our waitress Suzanna who was absolutely wonderful answering all of our questions about the restaurant and the design. Plus she was incredibly attentive clearing away and getting us fresh tea and stocking me up with some more marshmallows! Thanks Suzanna xxx

Of course no visit to Sketch is complete without the obligatory trip to and photograph of the toilets. The Sketch bathroom truly is a weird and wonderful place and so at odds with the Gallery decor but I love the colourful sense of fun it has. Definitely a photo opportunity.

Sketch was 100% worth the price which some may find a bit steep at £39 but we loved every minute of the service, the decor and the food. The menu changes with the seasons so I’d love to go back later this year and try some of the new cakes and sandwiches.

You can book really easily online at Sketch and I totally recommend a visit if you haven’t been yet.

Let me know if you have any of your own favourite places to go in London.
